The Big Idea: A hillside dwelling organized around a single luminous volume - the lantern - that orients every space toward the view.
Client Aspiration: Our client owned a steep Silverlake site with an exceptional hillside panorama, but the topography made capturing that view from within the villa far from guaranteed. They came to us wanting a home that felt connected to the landscape without fighting it.
Our Guidance: Rather than imposing a conventional plan onto a difficult site, we let the view drive the organization of the home. The lantern - a light-filled central volume - became the connective element, drawing occupants toward the hillside vista from every point in the space. By working with the natural topography rather than against it, the structure finds its footing on the hill while the lantern above it reaches toward the sky and the view beyond. The result is a home that feels inevitable in its setting - as if it could only exist on this particular hill, facing this particular horizon.
